Have Airlines Crossed The Line?

I came across this spoof video and it made me laugh, but it also encouraged me to consider whether or not the airlines are making the right decision in imposing all of these ‘hidden fees’ (i.e., charging for things like checked bags, pillows and snacks), or would it be better to pile all of the charges into the cost of airfare?

Although oil prices have (thankfully) dropped from $150 a barrel in July, it’s going to take some time for the airlines to turn a profit at current prices. In order to stay afloat, they have to do something. I for one, would rather they charge for individual things so I can make personal choices that will lower the overall cost of my flying experience. I think the a la carte approach is the best approach, and that people will eventually get used to it.

That being said, there is a line that can be crossed as the airlines continue to operate in survival mode. I think they’ve already crossed it in a big way by imposing rule changes and fees for frequent flyers, their most valuable customers. Charging based on weight (because heavier people theoretically cost more fuel to transport) would be another bad decision that some airlines are reportedly considering.

If any part of the video below comes true, I will be able to report that the airlines dove HEADFIRST over the line and then I will book my next flight…er, trip….with Amtrak. Toot toot!
