How About a Little Privacy, Please?

Posted by Elliot Sawyer

We had a great lunchtime falafel meeting with Dave Taylor on Thursday afternoon. We caught him just as he was on his way to watch the Euro 2008 semifinals (wish I could have joined him). Dave is a blogging machine on the Internet, as well as a hacker, social media expert and a dad! Our team has a lot to think about this summer and meetings like this provide a unique new perspective on a part of our business that we might not have initially considered. We love it.

Dave encouraged us to think about privacy issues. Although our technologists are putting a great amount of time and thought into developing a site that is secure on the back-end, we had not fully considered how to demonstrate our commitment to providing a secure and trustworthy site to our users on the front-end.

Privacy concerns on the Internet have lessened in recent years due to how commonplace it is to buy things on the web. That being said, some people, (particularly skewed toward the older demographic) still don’t trust the Internet and are hesitant to put their personal information in the cloud.

It is our responsibility to make sure we are taking all of the steps not only to ensure that our users’ information is safe, but also to demonstrate this to them effectively. We are looking to implement several privacy certification options, including eTrust, BBB, and others.

We continue to be awed by the invaluable advice we receive from our mentors. Thank you Dave Taylor for the incredible information (and the gyros!) Enjoy the Euro 2008!

P.S. If you are ever looking for answers to tech-related questions from an expert, be sure to stop by “Ask Dave Taylor.”
